It runs a touch long and telegraphs a few beats, but as a crowd-pleasing upgrade with sharper action and just-enough satire about runaway A.I., it delivers exactly what a Friday-night horror craving needs.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) | Alfred Hitchcock's Collection | A Series of Reviews

Alfred Hitchcock may be known for his more popular films like Psycho, Notorious and The birds, but the movie that got him recognition as a mainstream filmmaker and opened his way to Hollywood was the 1934 crime thriller The Man Who Knew Too Much. The movie was later remade by Sir Hitchcock for Hollywood and with a much larger budget in 1956.  

A perfect mix of espionage and action, the movie is highlighted by a villain that is masterfully played by a menacing Peter Lorre who looks convincing as a scary, intimidating anti-hero with no remorse or fear of the consequences of his actions.

Featuring a shoot-out that saw bodies fall like a house of cards and a hostage situation that is suspenseful and thrilling, the man who knew too much is definitely an action flick that is crisp and engaging. 

Made in a near to nothing budget, the film is a masterful effort in storytelling and shows the directorial greatness of Sir Alfred Hitchcock. 

Giving nothing away, I can just say that it is a movie, still relevant as a thriller and still good enough to keep one interested. The class of Hitchcock makes his work timeless and fresh.

Stamping his jaw dropping mastery on the silver screen in his self proclaimed first true Hitchcock movie, The Lodger, Sir Alfred Hitchcock set the bar extremely high for the upcoming 1928 adventure thriller Downhill also known as When boys leave home.

The movie follows the misadventures of a bright school boy who sacrifices his career in order to save his friend's. The story is a simple tale of friendship and love and the uncertainty that life holds for us.

Although, Sir Hitchcock delivered the same remarkable technical flawlessness and directorial perfection that made The Lodger a success, it was the patchy and jerky story that made Downhill one of his weakest movies ever. In my humble opinion the fact that The lodgers was based on a novel and Downhill was written by the main lead Ivor Novello might be the main difference in the entire experience. Ivor, though a very captivating actor and a heartthrob of his times clearly did not have the story that could match Hitchcock's brilliance. Some may argue that Ivor's body of work is more in the writing department than in acting, but upon closer examination he was more a sounds guy than either and actor or a writer. His looks and expression are impressive in both The Lodger and Downhill, something that can't really be said about his writing in Downhill.

All in all, a silent movie that manages to keep you interested at least half the way and that does show you the brilliance of Sir Alfred Hitchcock in many parts, but eventually fails to deliver due to some very ordinary script. I would recommend everyone to watch it just to understand the importance of a story, or the lack of it.

Alfred Hitchcock's The Lodger is a testimony to the fact that the master did not require language, color or words to weave his magic and display his genius. To think in this day and age where one often disregards a movie for the lack of depth in dialog or for the ineffectiveness of CGI as an aid to creating horror, that a movie with no dialogs and that too for a longish duration for a silent film at one hour and 30 minutes, would be so captivating and gripping as the lodger is, is simply amazing. 

The wonderful haunting music and a couple of exceptional romantic tunes punctuate some masterful performances by June Tripp, Marie Ault and Ivor Novello. A suspenseful thrill ride with nothing but expressions, is no less than an acting academy that many a plastic actors if this era can take a lead from.

Hitchcock uses jealousy, anger, revenge, irony, love, passion and repentance as his tools to narrate a fairly simple tale with just the right amount of twists and turns to keep the audience interested.

Infernal by Bryan Coyne is another one in the long and not so perfect line of found footage movies. Where the post paranormal activity era has seen a horde of hand-held-camera-shot, low-budget and more tragically poorly scripted and acted movies, Infernal is nothing of the sort. Infernal is an intelligent, witty, technically sound, well-written and expertly acted horror film that brings forward a movie experience worth your time.

The film Julia 2014 revolves around a girl who is brutally raped and then seeks revenge by practicing an unacceptable form of therapy to restore herself. Ashley C. Williams plays Julia beautifully. She is a nurse. She is raped by her date and his friends after being drugged. Dumped somewhere by the water for the tides to take her, she still manages to get back to her home. The rape results in depression and drinking on a daily basis at a local bar. 

At the bar, Julia overhears a discussion about some new empowered therapy for rape victims. She then falls prey to this unacceptable therapy conducted by Dr. Sgundud, played by Jack Noseworthy. The therapy is based on some terms and conditions. One of the main terms that Dr, Sgundud put forth her is that she is not allowed to take revenge from the people who raped her. She seeks her revenge against men by acts of violence upon random victims.

Julia is a bold and powerful movie. Ashley C.William’s performance is the film’s strongest point. Phenomenal throughout the movie, Ashley did justice to her part. Overall the movie is powerful and raises questions about the rape culture. Julia is a very loud movie with very little dialogues. The movie is visually arresting, unique and worth a watch.

Perhaps the most controversial movie of the past 5 years was in the end a great comic feast. The movie that caused Sony Entertainment to get hacked and threatened was basically a below the belt hit at the current supreme leader of North Korea. To portray a living man in such manner is bordering on defamation and if that man is revered as a god by millions, then there must be some criticism against the appropriateness of the subject. Nonetheless, all aside the movie was hilarious!

The interview is a well complied action comedy describing the struggle of two friends in their pursuit of interviewing a greatly popular but highly detested personality, a dictator, Kim Jong-un. Aaron Rapaport, the producer of “Skylark Tonight”, along with his host Dave Skylark are known for broadcasting a popular television show, where they aim to make bizarre discoveries and headlines about celebrities. After a 1000-episodes bash, Aaron realizes that what he does is plain pathetic and that he should be doing stuff that benefits his viewers in some way. Tempt the fate and he soon gets a chance of interviewing the news sensation, Kim Jong-un. Plot twist? CIA. And from here begins a series of events leading to Kim’s interview and then his downfall as a dictator, followed by a revolution.

The duo, James Franco and Seth Rogen as we know them, have delivered a spectacular performance. The plot is new. There’s comedy. There’s action. A bit draggy, the story has good humor and keeps you glued to the screen until the end. Rogen is more or less the conventional Rogen that we are accustomed to seeing. Although Franco takes the lead with his impeccable comic-timing, both the actors have done justice to their roles. Lizzy Caplan, also appears sparingly, adding prettiness to the screen and has done a good job with her character.

For those of you who like comedy, this movie is not to be missed. It’s likely to give you a fairly good round of laughs. And if nothing else, watch it for Franco or Rogen. Enough said.

Gone Girl, a mystery thriller is the story of a prolific female writer Amy and her relationship with her unfaithful husband Nick. Based on a novel by Gillian Flynn, the plot may have been familiar to those who have read the novel. But for those of you who haven’t, you guys are in for some mind-boggling, enigmatic maze of events as they happen.

The story follows starts off when the Amazing Amy mysteriously goes missing on their fifth marriage anniversary from their house, a few years after having moved back to her husband’s native town. The husband, a below ordinary guy, financially dependent on his wife, becomes the prime suspect after a number of revelations in the investigations that follow and gets into the spotlight, followed by media freak shows everywhere, allegations, accusations and what not. Every clue (since its Amy’s favorite game) leads back to Nick, suggesting that he has murdered her because of their not-so-successful marriage. The rest of the story, you got to watch it to know it.

The movie stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as the male and female lead casts respectively, have given a stupendous performance throughout the film. All characters have been very well played but Carrie Coon who plays Nick’s sister Margo has also delivered a noteworthy performance.

So if you are looking for a not-your-average mystery film, I suggest you reorder your list because this movie has got everything that you could ever ask for. Happy watching.

Ek villain is an Indian romantic thriller. It is a story about an orphan Guru, played by Sidharth Malhotra, who grows up into a thug. He meets Aisha, played by Shraddha Kapoor, who is in love with life and has unique wishes and desires. He falls in love with her unique personality. She later tells him that she has a terminal illness and about her to-do list. Guru helps her fulfill most of her wishes. He marries her and gets her proper treatment. She recovers miraculously.

Rakesh Mahadkar, played by Riteish Deshmukh, is an unsuccessful man who is continuously nagged by his wife for being useless and poor. This makes him frustrated. He gets out this frustration by killing other women. Aisha happens to be one of them. He makes her beg for her life and the life of her kid but he kills Aisha while she was pregnant. The story is about Guru’s pursuit of her wife’s killer.

Overall, the movie is above average and totally unpredictable, which makes it stand out from other Bollywood movies. ‘Banjara’ being the most romantic number, the music is above average. I personally liked the movie because it’s emotional and unpredictable.

Plot: An officer finds himself caught in a time loop in a war with the alien race. His skills increase as he faces the same brutal combat scenarios, and his union with a Special Forces warrior gets him closer to defeating the enemy.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014) is the latest Tom Cruise movie to have hit the audiences. The movie is a sci-fi, drama, thriller that revolves around a love story between two officers who are fighting a war against the alien race. Allied forces officer Cage finds himself trapped in a time loop aster being splattered with alien blood and soon figures that he is not the only one to have experienced the loop. He soon finds Rita a celebrity warrior who has gone through the loop previously only to have an accident take it away from her. What follows, is a constant effort that Cage makes to win a war he cannot possibly lose if he maintains the loop against an enemy that is already using the loop to slowly drain down and defeat the human race. Cage's motive however is more governed by somehow cheating Rita's death which seems inevitable in the process.

Tom Cruise and Emily blunt have put in good performances and the acting overall has been a strong asset of the film. The idea of the film is also interesting and has a lot of margin for acting and storytelling. To me, however the loop has not been tackled too well by the storytellers and the director. The movie seems to be too occupied with repeating the cycle and hence each cycle does not offer too many moments to keep the audience involved. The looping demanded subtlety which the directors failed to achieve. I would have liked lesser loops shown in the movie with each one providing more thrills and a greater junk of storytelling.

Edge of Tomorrow Trailer _ TNT by Paradise

The production values are top notch. The aliens are well crafted and the look of the film is slick. The treatment does complete justice to the huge star cast and on those grounds the movie delivers because the audiences are surely bound to be impressed by what they see on the screens. It is equally enjoyable on DVD and in the cinema.

If you are a Sci-Fi fan or for that matter a Tom Cruise fanatic this is a must watch. The movie is good, could have been legendary, but it definitely ranks among the year's to-watch list.

Stretch (2014) Plot:  A hard-luck limo driver struggling to go straight and pay off a debt to his bookie takes on a job with a crazed passenger whose sought-after ledger implicates some seriously dangerous criminals.

Stretch (2014) is a fast paced action thriller with a reasonable entertainment value and passable production value. Although the story is not fresh and emulates a tried formula, the characterization and acting makes it quite watchable.

Stretch is based on a night's work of a Stretch, a limo driver who is under a huge debt and aspires to pay it off through a prospective tip by an unstable customer. As the night goes on Stretch finds himself getting involved in a deep and twisted scenario involving crime and law enforcement agencies.

The cast does a good job in entertaining the audience and lifting the movie from ordinary to pleasurable. Chris Pine plays a good part and is at times magnificent as the crazed, yet dangerous customer. Ed Helms brings a mysterious dark element to the whole storytelling as a dead limo driver who is an imaginary friend to Stretch. Jessica Alba has a cameo that does add value to the project. Patrick Wilson as Stretch fits the part as he looks like your average loser. He has also acted well. Guest appearances by David Hasslehof and Ray Liotta definitely bring some added value and some needed humor to the mix and all in all the cast out does the script and lifts the whole movie.

On the whole Stretch is entertaining and is a good flick if you want to enjoy a movie without thinking too much.
